The Institute of fun is dedicated to creating educational, social, and fun events. Past events have included wine tastings, chocolate and massage, movie screenings, musical performances, and much more!
Coming in 2019: the Institute of Fun Freak Show.
As you may be aware, we’ve decided to relaunch the Institute of Fun after a 4-year hiatus. We’re excited about the possibilities for the revived IOF, and we want as you to get involved!
Our vision for the IOF is as a place and organization that you can look to as a reliable source of smart, social entertainment. Each Institute of Fun event will be aimed at teaching you at least one thing that you may not have known before the event. And, our events will be convenient for the busy person, affordable, and, most of all, fun!
To preview the sort of classes that we’ll be offering when we start up for real in the fall, we’re taking over the semi-circle stage space in front of the Marrs Building (20th Street between J and K) during the 2nd Saturday “This Midtown” event on July 13 from 4pm to 8pm.
The larger event is totally free and will feature some great bands, great food, and a variety of interactive and fun goings-on. Our area will feature 10 minute mini-classes, including:
Musicianship for Non-musicians
Math is Fun
How Does Hypnosis Work?
Do It Yourself in Sacramento
We’ll also be bringing members of the audience up on stage to try out to be Institute of Fun Professors. So, if you have an amazing thing that you can do and teach others to do, come on down and be ready to do your thing for 5 to 10 minutes! You too could join the elite ranks of the Institute of Fun professors.
The Institute of Fun is all about expanding the possibilities for having and creating fun in your town. We have some ideas about possible ways to do this and we just posted a bunch of potential fun events to our website at www.instituteoffun.com. If you have other ideas about what is fun, please let us know or add comments to our event ideas on the site!
The Institute of Fun will be doing a special event at This Midtown (www.thismidtown.com) on Saturday, July 13 from 4pm to 8pm. We’ll have Institute professors doing mini-courses, we’ll have open auditions to become an Institute of Fun professor, and we’ll be giving away Fun buttons! Come check us out in front of the Marrs Building on 20th Street between J and K in Midtown Sacramento!
The “Fun Button” is back! To celebrate the relaunching of the Institute of Fun, we’ve created a brand new FUN button! To get yours, look for a member of the Institute of Fun staff around town, or at one of our events, and just ask!
p.s. The Institute of Fun’s exclusive button vendor is Bearded Lady Buttons. If you have a button need, check them out, and tell them the Institute of Fun sent you.
The world-famous Fun Button, shown here on the bar at Hot Italian in Midtown Sacramento.
The Institute of Fun now offers sponsorship opportunities to businesses and individuals who want to support fun in their community! Sponsorship packages start at a one-time payment of $50, and benefits include T-shirts, buttons, signs at events, logos and banners on our site, and so much more!
Plus, with our WILD PARTY package, you can even name your own price (and possibly your own benefits). If you just want to have a little fun or if you want to have a whole lot of fun, the WILD PARTY sponsorship is for you!
The Institute of Fun™ has been on hiatus for the past few months, but there’s still a lot of fun stuff going on in town.
Here are a few of our favorite things, new and old:
Movies on a Big Screen
MOBS is an on-going film festival/microcinema that’s been showing a delightful smorgasbord of films since 2006. They are currently located at the Guild Theater, a beautifully restored theater right off of Broadway. Previews of upcoming films and a schedule are on their web site. Check them out: https://www.moviesonabigscreen.com/
Record Club Movie Night
at the Townhouse Lounge
The Townhouse, on 21st Street, was closed for a while, and frankly doesn’t have the most welcoming facade, but it’s worth venturing inside for the weekly Record Club Movie Night. They show music-related movies and serve a free dinner (spaghetti when we were there) on the second floor. Order a drink, grab some food, sit on the couches and watch the movie. Their web site, https://www.townhouselounge.com/, is not the most informative, so I suggest that you take your pick of becoming their “friend” on either Facebook or Myspace to find out more.
Live Band Karaoke
at Marilyn’s on K
I have always wanted to see (and perhaps try my hand at) live band karaoke, so one Tuesday evening soon I’ll need to make my way to Marilyn’s on K to check it out. Maybe I’ll see you there. https://marilynsonk.com/
What did you do this summer for fun? Let me know and I’ll add it to this post (or you can comment on this post). Thanks for helping us keep Sacramento fun!
